This past weekend, JPAC Kids premiered their rendition of Annie Jr., a special performance celebrating the Jefferson Performing Arts Center’s (JPAC) 20th anniversary.
The production featured over 100 kids split into two casts. Annie Jr.was chosen for the milestone because the original Annie was the first fundraiser that helped launch JPAC.
A heartwarming part of the celebration was the inclusion of Nikki, a dog with a remarkable rags-to-riches story. Nikki was rescued after spending her early years in a puppy mill, where she was kept in a small cage and had limited human interaction. Nikki’s transformation, thanks to her foster mom Linda Harned, has been nothing short of inspiring. Initially shy and fearful, Nikki gradually learned to trust humans and now enjoys their affection. She now stars in the show as Sandy, Annie’s loyal dog, embodying the “stray dog” character in New York City. Nikki’s journey to the stage is aided by her food motivation. In the show, she follows a popcorn seller, reflecting a stray dog’s natural instinct to follow food. Nikki’s presence on stage has been a joyful and impactful experience for the kids in the cast, who enjoy hugging and loving her. Producer Suzy Baldwin praised Nikki for being “phenomenal” with the children, adding a special touch to the performance. The production, which runs through the weekend, offers a festive, Christmas-themed show that’s perfect for the holiday season. Baldwin noted that the story’s timeless music and holiday spirit make it a great family outing.
