Shelter mascot: Kodiak senior dog adopted after 4 years at shelter

Kodiak,
AK -

Ace, an 11-year-old Husky and Labrador Retriever mix, originally from Kivalina, Alaska, finally found his forever home after spending four years at the Kodiak Animal Shelter.

Once a shelter mascot and favorite among staff and volunteers, Ace had struggled to find a permanent home due to quirks and challenges from past experiences. But everything changed when newlyweds Makayla and Christian Weeks began fostering him in late 2024.

The couple initially planned to adopt a puppy, but Ace’s gentle nature quickly won them over. “He filled a spot in my heart I didn’t know was empty,” Christian said. Despite being a senior, Ace still plays like a puppy and has brought healing and joy to his new family. Now, he sleeps in their bed, rides in the front seat of a Mustang, and enjoys the love he waited years to receive.

The Weeks encourage others to foster or adopt senior dogs, emphasizing the deep, mutual bond that can form. Ace's journey can be followed on TikTok: @mister.handsome4Ever.
