The Sun Valley Ski Patrol in Idaho recently certified three new avalanche rescue dogs and revalidated two others, preparing them for life-saving mountain missions.
Trained to detect human scent under snow, the dogs can locate buried victims faster than traditional search methods. Training begins in puppyhood, gradually increasing in difficulty with snow, crowds, and equipment, and dogs must be recertified every three years. Handlers say the dogs are essential for emergencies, providing a faster, more effective way to find missing or buried skiers.
