A Great Dane puppy is preparing to take over for one of St. Cloud’s most beloved therapy dogs — though she still has some growing up to do.
Wren, a 12-month-old Great Dane, is training to succeed Hulu at CentraCare St. Cloud Hospital. Hulu, nearly 8, has long comforted patients with his calm presence, but age is beginning to slow him down.
Wren is gaining experience at Paynesville Health Care Center, practicing gentle greetings and quiet connection. At more than 120 pounds, she looks the part — but she’s still very much a puppy, occasionally wiggly and easily distracted. Handler Wayne Chmelik hopes maturity will catch up with her size in time for a smooth transition, ensuring patients continue to be visited by a gentle giant long after Hulu retiires.
