Cattle dog trials kicked off at the 2026 Nebraska State Fair on Friday, with trained dogs demonstrating their ability to herd cattle through an obstacle course.

During the competition, trainers release three cows into a ring while their dogs guide them through six obstacles, responding to whistle commands from their handlers. Each obstacle can earn up to 30 points, for a maximum possible score of 180 points.

Organizers say the trials highlight the strong relationship between working dogs and their handlers. Many of the participating dogs regularly work on farms and ranches, making the competition an opportunity to showcase their everyday skills to fairgoers.
