Deer hunting season is underway, and when a blood trail becomes difficult to follow, some Kentucky hunters are turning to specially trained tracking dogs for help.

Sherman, a wirehaired dachshund, works with his handler, Rachel Crume of the Kentucky Blood Tracking Network. Despite his small size, Sherman is trained to follow the scent of wounded deer and help hunters recover animals that are difficult to find.

Crume said tracking dogs can be especially useful when rain washes away blood trails or when hunters have difficulty seeing them. This is the third hunting season she and Sherman have worked together, with much of their time spent training and preparing for calls.
