Chloe, a rescue dog who was once facing euthanasia at a New Mexico shelter, has been given a second chance after being rescued and trained to serve as a K9 with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

After being rescued by the Animal Rescue League of El Paso, Chloe was selected for the Border Patrol Canine Academy in Texas, where she completed specialized training in obedience and critical-incident response. Chloe is now the agency’s first-ever Critical Incident Response K9.

Chloe was later paired with Border Patrol Agent Miguel Carrillo in Louisiana. In addition to supporting public-safety operations, she visits hospitals, hospice patients and CBP families, providing comfort and companionship.

From facing euthanasia to becoming a pioneering K9, Chloe’s journey shows how a second chance can give a rescue animal a new purpose.
