A new genetic study has found that Chihuahuas share small sections of DNA with coyotes, giving researchers new clues about the breed’s ancient ancestry.

According to researchers at Stanford University, the genetic connection was identified while studying the DNA of dogs from the Americas. The findings suggest that Chihuahuas may retain genetic traces from dogs that lived in the region before European arrival.

Researchers say the discovery does not mean Chihuahuas are closely related to modern coyotes or that coyote DNA explains their appearance or behavior.
