A police K-9 named Digo from Grand Rapids, Michigan, is being hailed as a hero after surviving a life-threatening attack. Despite multiple stab wounds, he has made a remarkable recovery and returned to duty.
On May 30, officers encountered Eddie Deans Jr., 46, who allegedly threw a lit Molotov cocktail at police and attempted to steal a vehicle while armed with three knives. Digo was stabbed multiple times after being deployed. Deans Jr. was fatally shot after charging at officers with a knife.
Digo’s protective vest, designed to resist stabs and bullets, helped save his life, according to his handler, Sergeant Teddy Vanvliet. Within a month, Digo had fully recovered and returned to duty. Since returning, Digo has completed additional training. Vanvliet praised his courage and loyalty and expressed gratitude to have his partner back. Digo’s recovery highlights the bravery of police K-9s and the special bond they share with their handlers.
