A once-abandoned senior dog has found a new purpose and loving home with the West Warwick Police Department in Rhode Island.
Mouse, a 10-year-old pit bull mix affectionately known as “Mousey,” was brought to the town’s animal shelter in February after being found emaciated and severely malnourished. Initially too weak to move or eat properly, her condition gradually improved under the shelter’s care. However, she was later diagnosed with an aggressive form of lymphoma, and euthanasia was recommended due to her age and poor health.
Unwilling to give up, shelter staff sought a second opinion. Dr. Kim Nelson at Greenwich Valley Animal Clinic saw hope in Mouse and generously donated chemotherapy to extend her life. Thanks to that support, Mouse recovered enough to be adopted full-time by the West Warwick Police Department. Now officially known as K-9 Mouse, she recently completed therapy dog training and will be sworn in as the department’s first-ever comfort K-9 on June 17. Beloved by officers and staff, Mouse is being celebrated with limited-edition T-shirts featuring her official patch, sold to help cover her care and support the local shelter.
