Iconic dog breed on the ‘brink of extinction’ as puppy records fall

London,
UK -

The Smooth Fox Terrier, once a popular breed and famously known as the dog in the HMV logo, has experienced a significant decline in the UK, with only 45 puppies born in 2024, marking the lowest number since World War II.

This has led to the breed being classified as vulnerable. Other British breeds, including the Airedale Terrier, Yorkshire Terrier, and Shetland Sheepdog, are also now on the "At Watch" list in the UK. The Scottish Terrier, added to the list last year, has seen its numbers drop further, with only 387 puppies born in 2024.

Despite these concerning trends, there is some positive news: the Rough Collie and Cairn Terrier have been removed from the "At Watch" list due to increased puppy numbers, while the Skye Terrier and Otterhound have also shown growth. The Kennel Club, a UK-based organization, highlights the importance of raising awareness about these breeds to ensure their survival, noting that some are at risk of disappearing if people are unaware of them.
