For nearly 40 years, sentry and patrol dogs served alongside military personnel at Loring Air Force Base in Limestone, Maine.
About 100 dogs protected the base, with 14 buried at its now-deteriorated Sentry Dog Cemetery. To honor all these canine veterans, the Washburn Rotary Club is creating a permanent monument in Washburn's Veterans Memorial Park, featuring a life-size bronze German Shepherd and engraved bricks with the names of dogs and handlers.
The $9,700 project will be unveiled during the town’s August Festival. While local efforts continue to repair the cemetery, organizers emphasize that all the dogs, not just those buried at Loring, deserve recognition for their service.
