The Portland Police Department in Maine has welcomed a new comfort dog, an 8-week-old English Labrador named Archie.
Unlike service or emotional support animals that assist individuals, comfort dogs like Archie are trained to support the broader community. His role will include providing emotional support to officers, comforting crime victims and witnesses, and strengthening community relations.
Handled by Officer Les Smith, a veteran with over 30 years of experience, Archie will participate in public events, visit schools, and respond to crisis situations. The department selected Archie after a careful process, choosing a breed known for its friendly, affectionate nature. Chief Mark Dubois highlighted the initiative as a step toward better supporting both the public and police staff. Archie came from Boonefield Labradors in New Hampshire and will continue his training to interact effectively with people in high-stress or traumatic situations.
