Meet Smokey: The Great Dane Therapy Dog Helping First Responders Cope with Stress

Tioga,
ND -

First responders often face traumatic events, and studies show nearly 70% say they don’t have enough time to recover, increasing the risk of mental health struggles.

At the Tioga Fire and Ambulance Department, a seven-year-old Great Dane named Smokey is helping ease that stress. One of only two registered first responder therapy dogs in the state, Smokey provides comfort to the department’s more than 70 members.

Rescued as a puppy by handler Michelle Grubb, Smokey recently completed certification after months of training. Now the department’s mascot, he’s gaining attention locally and online while helping boost morale for firefighters and paramedics.
