Specially trained beagles at Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport are helping customs officials prevent prohibited agricultural products from entering the United States.
The “Beagle Brigade” works with customs officials to detect fruits, meats, and plants that may carry pests or diseases. The dogs alert handlers to restricted items in luggage, including finds like horse jerky and undeclared pork sandwiches. Officials say many travelers don’t realize they’re carrying prohibited food, but even small amounts can threaten agriculture and ecosystems.
The program began in 1984 and now operates at airports nationwide. Beagles are chosen for their strong sense of smell and friendly temperament, allowing them to effectively inspect luggage while remaining approachable to passengers.
