Colorado City Pays $675K to Settle Lawsuit Over Family Dog Killed by Officer

Loveland ,
CO -

The City of Loveland has agreed to pay $675,000 to settle a lawsuit over the 2019 police shooting of a family dog, believed to be the largest settlement of its kind in Colorado.

The case involved Herkimer, a 14-month-old Staffordshire Bull Terrier–Boxer mix dog fatally shot by Officer Mathew Grashorn during an encounter with the dog's owners. The family argued the dog was friendly and nonaggressive, while city officials said it charged the officer.

As part of the settlement, the city will expand police training on interactions with dogs. The agreement ends nearly seven years of litigation and does not include an admission of wrongdoing by the city.
