Los Angeles Police Department bodycam footage released Friday shows the fatal shooting of a 2-year-old Saint Bernard doodle, Jameson, during a response in a Canoga Park apartment, prompting public criticism and investigation.
According to the LAPD, officers responded to reports of screaming, later linked to a resident reacting to an NBA Finals game, and said the dog was shot after allegedly charging an officer while being told to be secured. The edited video appears to show an officer firing multiple shots as the dog moved forward, while the owner disputed the account, describing the dog as friendly and non-aggressive.
The officer was partially blurred in the footage due to reported safety concerns, and the release was expedited amid scrutiny. Mayor Karen Bass called the incident “disturbing and tragic,” and the LAPD Internal Affairs Division has launched an investigation that could take up to a year.
