The Northland K9 Foundation hosted its annual Operation K9 event in Superior, Wisconsin, bringing police K9 teams and the community together. Now in its 12th year, the event featured 17 handlers from across the Northland showcasing their dogs’ skills.
Among them was Duluth Police Officer Shane McKee and his K9 partner, Fitz, a dual-purpose dog trained in tracking, narcotics detection, evidence searches and criminal apprehension. McKee said working with Fitz has made his job more rewarding as he watches the dog improve through daily training.
The Northland K9 Foundation helps local agencies fund police K9 programs, providing up to $20,000 per dog. The event also gives families a chance to meet officers and their K9 partners, with demonstrations inspiring some young attendees to consider careers in law enforcement.
