Animal Advocates Push For Stricter Pet Grooming Rules After Dog Dies During Appointment

Largo,
FL -

Animal advocates in Florida are pushing for stricter regulations on pet groomers after a 10-year-old Great Pyrenees named Rilee died during a grooming appointment in Largo in October 2025.

Rilee’s owner says surveillance footage raised concerns about how the dog was restrained and how staff responded to the emergency. The grooming business was cited for failing to provide humane care and later pleaded no contest, receiving a $148 fine.

The incident has sparked support for “Rilee’s Law,” a proposed measure that would require pet groomers to receive basic emergency training, including CPR. Advocates say stronger statewide standards could help prevent similar incidents and ensure groomers are prepared to respond when animals are in distress.
