Mt. Bachelor Ski Patrol has welcomed a new member to its team: Scribble, a young black Labrador retriever training to become an avalanche rescue dog.
Scribble is still early in his training but is already learning how to navigate the mountain and work safely around skiers and snowboarders. One of his recent milestones was taking his first chairlift ride at Mt. Bachelor.
Avalanche rescue dogs are trained to use their sense of smell to locate people buried beneath snow. The training process can take about two years before a dog is fully prepared for rescue operations. For now, Scribble will continue learning and gaining experience on the mountain. Mt. Bachelor is sharing his progress as he works toward becoming a certified member of the avalanche rescue team.
