A five-year-old border collie named Tessa has made a remarkable recovery just four weeks after being struck in the head by a horse on her owner’s farm in Dixon, California. The incident left Tessa with severe facial injuries and required immediate medical attention.
The impact fractured the left side of her skull, displaced part of her forehead and pushed one eye back into its socket. Veterinarians at the University of California, Davis, led by Dr. Boaz Arzi, performed complex reconstructive surgery to repair her skull using plates and restore her eye to its proper position. Tessa was discharged the day after surgery and continued recovering at home.
Within four weeks, Tessa had returned to herding, training and playing Frisbee. Her rapid recovery impressed the veterinary team and earned her recognition as UC Davis Veterinary School’s “Case of the Month,” highlighting the importance of specialized veterinary surgery in treating serious animal injuries.
