A former stray dog named Greta from Truckee, California, has become a disaster search-and-rescue hero in Venezuela.

Greta, who was taken in by the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe in 2024, went on to receive specialized training through the National Disaster Search Dog Foundation.

Greta was paired with firefighter Arby Fields of California Task Force 2, and the team earned FEMA certification in February 2025. On June 25, 2026, they deployed to Venezuela following two major earthquakes, joining rescue teams searching collapsed buildings for survivors.

The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe praised Greta’s remarkable transformation, highlighting how shelter animals can make a life-saving impact when given a second chance.
