A Portland restaurant hosted a tribute to Baxter, Maine’s first official comfort dog.
The 3-year-old chocolate Labrador, who provided emotional support to first responders across the state, was found dead in a state vehicle on May 28, 2025, after it reportedly stopped running, causing the air conditioning system to shut down.
The event brought together community members to celebrate Baxter’s life and recognize the comfort and companionship he provided. Supporters said the gathering was a way to honor his legacy and highlight the important role comfort dogs play in supporting emergency personnel.
