The Reno Fire Department announced the retirement of arson K9 Boston on April 7 after five years of service in Nevada.
Boston, a 6-year-old English black Labrador and the city’s first ignitable liquid detection dog, joined the department in 2021 after completing specialized training. Working alongside his handler, Captain Sean O’Brien, he assisted in more than 50 fire investigations, helping detect accelerants such as gasoline and kerosene.
Officials say Boston also played a key role in community outreach, participating in over 50 events and earning a reputation as a friendly, therapy-like presence. City leaders praised his service, calling his retirement “well-deserved.” Boston is expected to spend his retirement relaxing and remaining with his handler.
