A new Ohio state law is raising the stakes for dog owners, introducing stricter penalties for bites and emphasizing prevention.
Avery’s Law, now in effect, allows for criminal charges in some dog bite cases, in addition to civil liability. Dogs involved in incidents may also be classified as “dangerous” or “vicious,” potentially leading to serious consequences, including euthanasia.
Valarie Ross-Smith, a local dog trainer and owner of Sits n’ Wiggles Dog Training, says the law highlights the need for stronger pet management and training. She urges owners to focus on prevention through reward-based training, proper equipment, and safety measures at home. Experts recommend tools like muzzle training, secure leashes and harnesses, and properly maintained fences to reduce risks. With the new law in place, they say responsible ownership is more important than ever.
