A 3-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer named Fillmore is being hailed as a hero after alerting his family to a garage fire in Orange County, California.

The fire broke out early Wednesday while the family slept, but Fillmore’s persistent barking woke them in time to escape. Flames had already engulfed the garage and were close to spreading to the home.

The homeowner used a hose to slow the fire until firefighters arrived. Officials believe the cause was electrical. No injuries were reported, and the family says Fillmore likely saved their home and their lives.
