From Stray to Hero: Texas Search-and-Rescue Dog Canyon Named ASPCA Dog of the Year

Canyon, a former stray from Mississippi, has been named the 2026 ASPCA Dog of the Year for his remarkable work as a search-and-rescue dog.

After being rescued in 2021, Canyon was trained through a Texas A&M program to help locate missing people and disaster victims. He has assisted in several major emergencies, including the Maui wildfires, Hurricane Helene and the devastating 2025 Texas floods.

During the Texas floods, Canyon spent more than 90 days searching for victims and survivors along the Guadalupe River. His dedication and skills have made him an important part of search-and-rescue efforts.

The ASPCA said Canyon represents the courage, resilience and lifesaving abilities of shelter animals. He will be honored alongside other 2026 Humane Award recipients at a ceremony in New York City on October 8.
