From Stray to School Star: 160-Pound Therapy Dog Helps Maine Students

Carmel,
ME -

A 160-pound therapy dog is making a big impact at Carmel Elementary School in Maine after students successfully petitioned to bring him to campus.

Enzo, a 7-year-old blind and deaf Mastiff rescued from Texas, has been visiting the school's library weekly since 2024 alongside his owner, Dawn Scovel. Students read to him, cuddle with him, and say his calming presence has boosted their confidence and reduced stress.

School staff say Enzo's visits support students' growing social and emotional needs, while his own inspiring journey from stray dog to therapy companion teaches resilience and compassion. Beyond the school, Enzo also serves as a therapy dog at veterans events.
