Bailey, an English cream golden retriever known as the “Queen of the North End,” made an unexpected splash Saturday evening when she escaped her harness and swam into Boston Harbor during the Feast. The unusual adventure quickly turned into a rescue operation.
Her owner, Jake Duhaime, called the North End Fire Department for help as Bailey happily paddled near Sargent’s Wharf. Firefighters tried to lure her back with treats, but Bailey seemed more interested in swimming. Eventually, one firefighter waded into the water, carried her toward the dock, and worked with colleagues to get her safely back on shore.
Although Duhaime said the incident was embarrassing, he also found it funny and praised the firefighters and North End community for their help. Bailey later appeared to have no regrets, with a post on her Instagram joking that she had been “rescued against my will” and would do it again.
