A 13-year-old seventh grader is gaining momentum in his campaign to make the rescue animal Kentucky’s official state pet.
Ethan Branscum of Frankfort has advocated for the change for years. After multiple failed attempts, the proposal is now attached to Senate Bill 37, sponsored by Sen. Robin Webb, which also names the Treeing Walker Coonhound as the state’s official dog breed.
Branscum says the designation would raise awareness for shelter animals and boost adoption efforts. He also runs Ethan’s Rescue Pet Project, promoting animal welfare and youth engagement. As the legislative session winds down, the bill’s future now lies with state lawmakers.
