Polk County Sheriff’s K-9 Ace is expected to retire from law enforcement after being shot while helping deputies confront an armed suspect in Florida.
According to Sheriff Grady Judd, Ace was shot in his left front leg during a standoff with 27-year-old Angel Bowers. Authorities said Bowers, who had failed to appear in court on charges related to unlawful sex with a minor, reportedly shot Ace during the confrontation.
Ace underwent surgery, but the injury was so severe that veterinarians had to amputate his left front leg. He survived the shooting and is now recovering. The sheriff’s office praised Ace for his bravery and service, saying the injury will bring his law-enforcement career to an end.
