Portland Police Bureau K-9 Kylo was shot and killed Thursday during an officer-involved shooting on what was supposed to be his final shift before retirement, ending his nearly seven-year career in Oregon.
Kylo was assisting officers who were trying to arrest a murder suspect near a Southeast Portland hotel. Police said the suspect attempted to flee shortly before 2 p.m., triggering a shootout involving Portland and other law enforcement officers. The suspect was struck and died at the scene. Officers recovered a gun nearby, while a hotel guest reported hearing 20 to 30 gunshots.
Kylo was wounded during the shooting and later died at a veterinary hospital. A police procession escorted his body to Oregon Humane’s Animal Crimes Forensic Center as authorities continued their investigation.
