A federal judge has blocked the euthanasia of Major, a Belgian Malinois who has spent 575 days in isolation at an Austin animal shelter. The ruling gives the dog another chance at life.
Major was taken into custody in March 2025 after biting a woman who tried to help him following an accident. His owner, Shane Lilly, has fought to save him, saying Major is a service dog who helps him manage seizures.
Under the ruling, Major must be transferred to a rescue organization outside Austin for at least 30 days of behavioral evaluation. The city maintains concerns about public safety. Major's possible return to his owner will depend on the results of the evaluation.
