Bought a sick pet in Florida? New law gives you more power to fight back

Tallahassee,
FL -

A new state law is giving pet buyers stronger legal protections if they discover they purchased a sick animal, including the ability to seek refunds, file small claims cases, and recover minimum compensation in certain disputes.

The legislation, which took effect July 1, expands consumer rights for people who buy cats and dogs from breeders or dealers. It requires sellers to provide veterinary records and disclose any medications the animal was taking before the sale. Buyers may also cancel financing agreements without penalty if a pet is later found to be ill or unfit.

The law also streamlines dispute resolution by allowing veterinary re-examinations and giving consumers a clearer path to court if disagreements persist. Officials say the changes are intended to curb deceptive sales practices and improve accountability in Florida’s pet market.
