Death Cap mushrooms are raising concerns among pet owners in Indiana after a dog died from eating the toxic fungi. Experts warn that the mushrooms can be deadly to dogs.
Dog owner Debra Burns said she initially mistook the mushrooms for ordinary ones. Her dog, Sadie, later developed vomiting and diarrhea after eating them and died four days later. A veterinarian confirmed that Death Cap mushrooms caused her death. Burns has since shared her experience on Facebook to warn other pet owners.
Experts say wet and humid conditions can cause the mushrooms to grow quickly in yards and other areas. The fungi can cause severe liver and kidney damage within 24 to 48 hours. Pet owners are urged to seek veterinary help immediately if they believe their dog has eaten a Death Cap mushroom.
