The Buffalo Police Department has welcomed Chance, an 11-week-old puppy, as its new therapy dog to help officers cope with the emotional demands of law enforcement.
Chance has been working with wellness coordinator and handler Matthew Cross for three weeks. Cross said Chance can help reduce stress and create a comfortable way for officers to open up when they are struggling. The puppy will receive further training to support officers during emotional crises and critical incidents.
Donations from Milk-Bone are helping cover Chance’s costs. Cross hopes the therapy dog will become another avenue for officers to seek support and address mental health challenges.
