A dog with epilepsy was reunited with his family after Mesa firefighters rescued him from a canal during Monday's monsoon storms in Arizona.
The dog, Ansel, had escaped through an accidentally open gate while the family searched urgently because of his medical condition. Firefighters responded to reports of a dog struggling in a canal and entered the fast-moving, debris-filled water to rescue the exhausted animal.
After the rescue, Ansel was taken to a veterinary clinic before firefighters learned through a social media post that the Melzer family was searching for him. He was then safely reunited with his owners. Mesa officials reminded pet owners to keep pets indoors during severe weather and to have them microchipped to improve the chances of a successful reunion if they become lost.
