Stretch, a nearly 12-year-old golden retriever, is a certified water recovery dog who helps search crews locate drowning victims in Utah.
Working alongside his handler, Joe Jennings, Stretch uses his powerful sense of smell to detect human scent rising from beneath the water. From a boat, he puts his nose close to the surface and searches for changes in scent. When he gets close to a possible location, Jennings says Stretch raises his head and begins wagging his tail, helping crews narrow their search area.
Stretch’s work has helped bring answers and closure to grieving families, including helping locate a young girl who drowned. Jennings says working with Stretch is about serving others and continues a lifetime of helping people. For their dedication to Utah families, Stretch and Jennings are being recognized as K9 Heroes.
