At Albany International Airport two therapy dogs are drawing attention for an unusual talent that goes beyond calming anxious travelers they can solve math problems
Rose and Farrah, both Shetland Sheepdogs, respond to questions by tapping out answers with their paws, such as five taps for 2+3 or twelve for 6×2. Their handler, Terrance Brown, one of 25 volunteer therapy teams at the airport, says the dogs are there to comfort passengers, especially those dealing with anxiety or fear of flying.
Brown, a Vietnam veteran inspired by his own experience with PTSD, says the dogs have helped calm travelers during stressful moments, including a panic attack in the terminal. The therapy team also visits schools, nursing homes, and veteran events.
