Rhode Island firefighters rescued Jax, a pit bull, from a house fire on Woodland Road in Smithfield after finding him unconscious beneath blankets and towels in a bedroom.
About a dozen firefighters worked to save Jax, providing oxygen, fluids and cool towels to lower his body temperature. He began to recover on the way to an animal hospital, where he perked up and wagged his tail at veterinarians.
Jax returned home later that night and is expected to make a full recovery. Officials said the fire, which started on the stove, was accidental and contained to the kitchen. No people were injured.
