While many Americans participated in National Take Your Dog to Work Day on June 26, one campus canine at Davenport University is on duty year-round.
Onyx, a 5-year-old English black Labrador retriever, serves as a full-time member of the university’s Public Safety team. Working a standard 40-hour week alongside handler Brett Windsor, Onyx also logs overtime during campus events and has already contributed more than 110 hours of community outreach this year.
The therapy dog plays a visible role across campus life, greeting students and visitors, attending football games and student events, and supporting outreach programs across multiple Davenport campuses. Staff say her presence helps ease interactions and provide comfort to students, including those facing personal hardship. The university is now planning a fundraising initiative to expand the therapy dog program and support Onyx’s continued campus role.
